Elbe Canyon
The Elbe Canyon, stretching from Děčín to the German border, is one of the most impressive natural formations in Europe. This deeply incised valley system, lined with dramatic sandstone walls, forms the heart of the Czech Switzerland National Park and attracts the attention of hikers, climbers, cyclists and water sports enthusiasts.

The deepest sandstone canyon in Europe
The Elbe Canyon is indeed the deepest sandstone canyon in Europe. In some places it reaches a depth of up to 300 metres (e.g. near Děčín, where the famous Shepherd’s Wall or the Děčín Sněžník massif towers above the river). Overall, it is one of the most massive river canyons on the continent, thanks to its length, depth and geological uniqueness. The Elbe River cuts its way through the Bohemian and Saxon parts of the sandstone plateau, creating breathtaking scenery with high rock walls, natural views and dense forests.
Timber and ships with their cargoes sailed through the canyon
The Elbe Canyon has also played an important economic role in the past. Due to the relative navigability of the Elbe and the steep slopes of the Krušné hory and Lužické hory in the vicinity, this section served as the main route for timber shipping – especially from the Šluknov and Bohemian Switzerland regions. The timber was transported into the river and travelled downstream towards Litoměřice, Ústí nad Labem and on to Central Bohemia and Germany.
In addition to timber, the river has also been used for freight shipping since the Middle Ages. The importance of the Elbe as a transport artery increased after the construction of the sewer system and locks in the 20th century. Today, freight and cruise ships still use the river, for example on the Děčín – Dresden – Magdeburg route.
Tourist paradise with views and quiet corners
The Elbe Canyon is nowadays especially popular thanks to the hiking trails that line its walls and lead to breathtaking sights such as:
-
Belvedér at Labská Stráně – a historic baroque terrace overlooking the canyon
-
Pink viewpoint – with views of the river and surrounding rocks
-
The Kamenice River, which flows into the Elbe and offers a romantic cruise through the springs
-
Schrammstein and Bastei on the German side – with panoramic views of the entire Elbe arch
The canyon is also ideal for cycling – the Elbe Trail (EuroVelo 7) runs along the river all the way to Germany and is one of the most popular long-distance routes in Europe. Paddlers, on the other hand, will enjoy the stretch between Děčín and Hřensko, where the river offers beautiful scenery without major weirs.
Lookout tower Růženka
The Růženka lookout tower in the nearby village of Růžová acts not only as a place of views, but also as an architectural jewel in the landscape – its simple and pure shape resembles a rose flower and blends in with the surrounding nature. It was built in 2018 to a design by architect Marcela Steinbach and has gained popularity for its unobtrusive beauty and sensitive integration into the landscape.
The Pasture Hill, on the back of which the tower stands, has a special atmosphere in itself. In the 20th century, there was a windmill here – and if you stand here, you will understand why. The place is windy, changeable and strikingly alive. While one side of the hill is bathed in sunlight, on the other side heavy clouds can suddenly roll in and the wind can pick up. You get the feeling that two elements are competing – light and shadow, day and night.
From the gallery you can see the Krušné hory, Lužické hory, České Švýcarsko and České středohoří – four completely different landscape types that converge into one visually stunning whole. You can just stand here and contemplate how each of these mountain ranges was created, what it has survived – and what the landscape will look like in another million years.

And a few more tips:
- A number of hiking trails are woven into the Elbe Canyon. Probably the most beautiful is the route along the red marked path between Děčín and Labská Stráň. It offers a number of wonderful views of the canyon.
- Suitable season: it is beautiful here all year round, especially the sunsets or sunrises over the river are breathtaking
- How to get here: parts of the canyon are accessible on foot (viewpoints), by car and by bus (Hřensko and the route along the river to Děčín)
