Dominating feature of the town: the Church of St. James the Greater

One of the most striking points of the city is Church of St. James the Greater , a Gothic-Renaissance building dating back to the 14th century. It has undergone several renovations over the years, but still retains its impressive atmosphere. The interior is decorated with Baroque decorations, an interesting altar and a valuable organ. The church is not only the spiritual centre of the town, but also an important cultural monument.

The astronomical clock in Česká Kamenice – unique chimes

Called “the astronomical clock” by the locals, it is actually a unique mechanical chime located on one of the buildings in the centre of the town. It is not a traditional astronomical astronomical clock, as we know for example from Prague, but an interesting sound installation with moving figures. Every hour it delights visitors with a short melody and an original spectacle. It is a popular place especially for families with children and all those who like technical curiosities.

Natural pearls in the surroundings: the Silver Hill and Jehla

Silver Hill

The Silver Hill ( 586 m above sea level), a popular sightseeing point and a favourite destination for hikers, towers above the town. The peak offers a magnificent view of the surrounding landscape of the Lusatian Mountains, Czech Switzerland and, in good visibility, even Germany. The ascent is easy and suitable for families with children. On the way you can enjoy the tranquility of nature and beautiful forest scenery.

Needle

Another unique natural feature is Jehla, a roughly 30-metre high basalt rock needle that rises on the edge of the forest near the town. This distinctive geological formation, resembling a slender obelisk, is a popular destination for photographers and climbers. The needle is freely accessible and its surroundings offer an ideal setting for short hikes or picnics in nature.

Festival KAMEN!CE

A major music festival will be held in the city from 2021.

The festival is held annually in June and offers a varied musical programme including alternative, electronic, rock and pop music. Past performers have included David Koller, Tata Bojs, Aneta Langerová, PSH, Digitalism, Jana Kirschner, Mňága a Žďorp, Monkey Business and others. The festival also gives space to young talents and Roma bands.

In addition to music, the festival offers a rich accompanying programme: guided tours of the city, theatre performances, film screenings, workshops, yoga, water aerobics and other activities. In 2023, the festival expanded to include the KAMEN!CE Winter Edition, which takes place in February at the House of Culture and offers a one-day programme of concerts and other cultural events.

And a few more tips:

  • Suitable season: it is beautiful here all year round :-)
  • With children: yes, take the yellow trail from the square towards the swimming pool in Kamenice. There you will find a miniature park called Brand-Mills.
  • How to get here: by car and park in the centre on Náměstí Míru. A number of bus lines and train connections, including the National Park Railway, go directly to Česká Kamenice.
