Kottmar – Eibau
Okolo z dálky viditelného 583 m vysokého vršku je seskupeno sedm částí střediskové obce, jejichž vzezření je dáno pro Horní Lužici typickými podstávkovými a faktorskými domy, mnohé z nich s prvky venkovského baroka.
The present-day town of Kottmar was founded on January 1. 01. In 2013, it was formed through the merger of several municipalities and is divided into 7 local districts:
Eibau (včetně vsí Kottmarhäuser a Löbauer Wiese)
Kottmarsdorf
Neueibau
Niedercunnersdorf
Obercunnersdorf
Ottenhain
Walddorf
These places bear witness to the linen-making tradition and the linen trade that once brought prosperity to the entire region. Just as linen was once shipped all over the world, for decades now tourists have been coming from all corners of the globe to our region, seeking and finding relaxation here.
In our village, for example, you can—just for fun—be “baptized” at the highest spring on the Spree River, located on the slopes of Kottmar Hill, visit our museums in historic buildings, learn about the daily life of a miller at the Kottmarsdorf windmill, take part in traditional village and national festivals, or cool off at one of our public swimming pools.
The Eibau Beer Parade, held every year on the last weekend in June, the annual potato festival (Abernfest) in Obercunnersdorf, the Niedercunnersdorf
marksmen’s competition “Niedercunnersdorfer Schissn,” and the reapers’ championship in Ottenhain are sure to be an unforgettable experience for you.
You can find out more about current offers, as well as accommodation options at hotels, guesthouses, and private lodgings, at the “Spreequelland” tourist information center in the Faktorský House in Eibau, at the “Haus des Gastes” branch in Obercunnersdorf, or online from home.
We look forward to welcoming you!
What you should see
Mount Kottmar—one of the peaks of the Lusatian Mountains, now part of the Görlitz district. It rises to 583 meters above sea level. Like the nearby Schlechtenberg in Ebersbach and the Löbauer Berg, it is an extinct volcano formed during the Tertiary period. It consists of the volcanic igneous rock phonolite. The Spree River and the Cunnersdorfer Wasser stream, which originate here, flow into the North Sea, while the Petersbach, which also originates on Kottmar, flows via the Lusatian Neisse and the Oder into the Baltic Sea. Kottmar is thus part of the Upper Lusatian watershed.
Kottmar Lookout Tower – The Kottmar Lookout Tower (583 m above sea level) was built in 1881. The brick structure has 75 steps and is 16 meters tall.
The Source of the Spree – At the foot of Mount Kottmar lies one of the three sources of the Spree River, or Upper Spree (German: Spree; Lower Sorbian: Sprjewja). It is the highest-altitude source of this river. The other two sources are located in the neighboring town of Ebersbach-Neugersdorf.
Eibau Brewery + Beer Carnival Parade –
The historic Beer Parade in Eibau (Eibauer Bierzug) is known far beyond the borders of Upper Lusatia. It has been held annually since 1993 on the last Sunday in June to commemorate the “Beer War” between the towns of the former Six Towns—Görlitz, Zittau, and Löbau. A special feature of the festive parade is the large number of horses, often pulling six-horse teams of festive floats, and costumed riders on horseback depicting allegorical scenes from the history of Upper Lusatia and beer production. The parade also includes bands, pipers, and, of course, beer, which is served free of charge from the allegorical floats to the audience lining the route. The three-day folk and traditional festival at the Volkshaus rounds out the “Beer Festival.” Every Saturday before the “Beer Parade,” a tour of classic cars takes place around Eibau.
The Kottmarsdorf Windmill—a typical Upper Lusatian wooden windmill (Bockwindmühle) dating from 1843—stands on a 435-meter-high hill known as “Pfarrberg,” offering a beautiful view of the surrounding area.
Faktorský dvůr v Eibau (Faktorenhof) – výstava k dějinám a historickým zvláštnostem Eibau. Domovské a Humboldtovo muzeum, infocentrum.
Other museum exhibits in the village can be found here.
Obercunnersdorf Public Heated Swimming Pool with Mini-Golf
Eibau Public Swimming Pool – With 3,000 m² of water surface, this swimming pool is known as one of the most beautiful and popular swimming pools in the region.
