Falkenštejn Rock Castle
Falkenštejn Rock Castle is located less than a kilometer northeast of the village of Jetřichovice. It was built in the 14th century as the administrative center of the local estates of the Michalovic family and to protect the trade route from Meissen and Lusatia. The last written mention of the castle dates back to 1457. It was probably abandoned not long after. It was rediscovered only with the rise of Romanticism in the 19th century, when it became a popular tourist destination. The remains of a chamber carved into the rock and a water cistern have been preserved to this day. At the turn of the 20. and 21st century, intensive archaeological research was carried out here. The most valuable finds include the so-called “Falkenštejn Madonna” – a small ceramic statuette from about the 15th century.
In 2017, the NPČŠ Administration, in order to protect this cultural monument and make it accessible to the public, had new steel stairs, walkways and railings built on the rocky promontory. At the same time, a small tourist circuit was created, as two paths will lead to the summit, one of which is intended only for the ascent and the other only for the descent.
