Where to Hide in Bohemian Switzerland: Inspiration for Rainy and Sweltering Days
Our best recommendation is to head out into the forests and meadows of Bohemian Switzerland even in the rain. However, we understand that sometimes it is good to shelter under a roof for a while – especially when it is a beautiful Baroque or Renaissance one – order a warm meal, and just unwind. Here are a few tips on where to do just that this summer.
Děčín Castle
Zámek Děčín can easily absorb you for a whole day. You can experience a classic castle tour, but you can also look out for a special children’s programme, book a tactile tour for the visually impaired, play an immersive escape game, taste authentic Greek cuisine at the Athina restaurant, or simply lounge in Kavárna Thun (the Thun Café), gazing into the castle gardens and imagining how the Thun family once lived here and what motivated them to enrich this region.

Nobilis Tilia in Vlčí Hora
In one of the most beautiful yet secluded parts of Bohemian Switzerland, you will come across a world-class aromatherapy production facility. At the Nobilis Tilia shop, you can not only buy products but also create your own custom aromatherapy blends on the spot. The rest of your group can either enthusiastically join in or wait for you in the Herbal Tea Room (Bylinková čajovna), which is packed with treats and interesting reading material. It is a good idea to plan your trip here according to their events calendar to catch one of their packed workshops or inspiring lectures. You can even book a cosmetic treatment, a massage, or a personal consultation, leaving to discover other corners of Bohemian Switzerland with fresh energy and a renewed look.

Pumphut’s Mill in Krásná Lípa
In the historic cellar premises of house No. 480/7 on Komenského Street in the centre of Krásná Lípa, right next to the school building, a small group of 3 to 5 people can find shelter from bad weather. You will be entertained for about an hour trying to spin the mill wheel, which was stopped by the mischievous goblin Pumphut with his cheeky magical tricks. This escape room, based on a local legend, is designed for both children and adults.

Zámek v Benešově nad Ploučnicí (Benešov nad Ploučnicí Castle Complex)
In the north of Bohemia, a unique and exceptional historical structure is still somewhat hidden from tourists – the so-called pearl of the Saxon Renaissance, the Benešov nad Ploučnicí castle complex (zámecký komplex Benešov nad Ploučnicí). It comprises a total of seven castle buildings, six of which are castles themselves – so there is plenty to explore regardless of the weather, as the indoor spaces offer protection from rain, and in summer, from the heat.
You can visit separate castle exhibitions: for instance, the Upper Castle (Horní zámek) showcases the flourishing period of the 18th and 19th centuries, whereas the Lower Castle (Dolní zámek) takes you back to the ancient and darker 16. times of the 16th and 17th centuries. And what if history isn’t quite your thing? No problem – the castle organises several cultural events year-round for both adults and children, including vintage car rallies, children’s tours with a clown, Christmas and spooky tours, as well as events for hikers and animal lovers. Do not miss this pearl and pay a visit to Benešov.

Dino herna in Rumburk (Dino Playroom)
When the heavens open, parents bear the brunt. Therefore, when it rains around Rumburk, head straight to Dino herna at the Wellness Hotel Lužan on Lužické náměstí square. Children can safely amuse themselves and run wild on the giant climbing tower. Meanwhile, you can enjoy a bit of peace and quiet, and perhaps even squeeze in one of the wellness treatments… And if you are looking for a venue for an unforgettable celebration, Dino herna is the perfect choice! The special party room is ideal for birthday parties and private events full of games, laughter, and dinosaur-themed fun.

Šluknov Castle
In the northernmost town of the outcrop, a pearl of the Saxon Renaissance awaits you, offering a glimpse into the daily life of a First Republic nobleman. Šluknovský zámek also functions as a vibrant cultural centre, organising events to entertain and educate the general public. Music, theatre, discussions, and traditional festivities are on the agenda all year round – from Shrovetide (Masopust) and Easter to Witches’ Night (pálení čarodějnic), Castle Festivities, or Advent creative workshops and markets.

Loretánská kaple v Rumburku (Loreto Chapel in Rumburk)
Wondering whether it’s worth heading to Rumburk? Don’t overthink it, just go! People have long stopped visiting the northern outcrop just for the local colour. There are interesting businesses, cultural events, and above all, the northernmost Loreto (Loreta) in Europe, boasting breathtaking Baroque decoration. It is open from May to October, from Tuesday to Saturday, on selected public holidays, and also on 13 September, when the grand Loreto Festivities (Loretánské slavnosti) take place. Furthermore, at Loreta, you will find yourself on the route of the international pilgrimage trail Via Sacra, which connects significant pilgrimage sites on the borders of Germany, Poland, and the Czech Republic. So, if you don’t feel ready for the Camino de Santiago just yet, you can train right here.

Rumburk Museum
At the Rumburk Museum (Muzeum Rumburk), you can browse permanent exhibitions dedicated to local phenomena, such as the beautiful black-and-white photographs by Jiří Stejskal capturing the “Czech Netherlands” (České Nizozemí), as the Šluknov region is also known, the bizarre “Rumburk Rebellion” (Rumburská vzpoura), or an ornithological excursion focused on the local pond. There is also a guided tour accompanying the historically significant exhibition “Forgotten Paintings from the Castle in Lipová” (Zapomenuté obrazy ze zámku v Lipové).
Nožířské muzeum v Mikulášovicích (Knife Museum in Mikulášovice)
For a “sharper” experience, visit the knife museum (Nožířské muzeum) in Mikulášovice, located directly inside the local tourist information centre building. The admission fee is very reasonable, leaving you with plenty of cash for souvenirs. You will learn just about everything there is to know about knives and their history, from Cain to Wolverine, not forgetting Edward Scissorhands 😊. From May to October, it is open daily from 9 am to 4 pm, and you can arrange for the museum to open for larger groups outside these hours by calling +420 733 111 094.
Whether a summer downpour or sweltering heat catches you by surprise in Bohemian Switzerland, there is no reason to stay cooped up in your room. Castles, museums, interactive playrooms, and thrilling escape games offer endless entertainment and discovery for both young and old.
