St. Martin’s Day, which falls on November 11th, is just around the corner. It is associated with a rich history and a number of traditions that date back to the Middle Ages. One of the most famous symbols of this holiday is the roast goose. We have great tips for you on where to go to celebrate St. Martin’s Day this year with a traditional St. Martin’s menu!

First, let’s talk about St. Martin…

Legend has it that Saint Martin was originally a Roman soldier. He later converted to Christianity and became a missionary and then bishop of Tours. But this was preceded by this incident: Martin, in his modesty, did not want to accept the episcopal rank and hid from the envoys in a goose barn among a flock of geese. However, they betrayed him with their loud cawing. In return, geese became a traditional dish served in his honor.

Another legend says that one cold night he met a poor beggar and shared his cloak with him – an act of compassion and help that symbolizes the values that Saint Martin represents. When Martin died, his reputation as a saint spread, and so the tradition of celebration began on the day of his funeral.

St. Martin is also associated with the proverb “Saint Martin comes on a white horse”, which is well known in the Czech lands and refers to the expectation of the first snow. Although not every year Martin really “comes on a white horse,” the saying retains its charm and reminds us of the magic of the arrival of winter. The feast of St. Martin and this proverb thus tune us into the winter atmosphere, the expectation of the first snow and the excitement of the Advent season every year.

And where to go for a traditional St. Martin’s Day menu?
