Decin Zoo

Děčín Zoo is a zoological garden located on the outskirts of the city of Děčín and, in terms of area, is one of the smallest gardens in the Czech Republic.

It was founded in 1948 and its grand opening took place a year later. The founder was a businessman from Děčín, Ludvík Grác, and when Děčín Zoo was established, there were only four zoos in the former Czechoslovakia. Originally, the garden was supposed to cover an area of 8 hectares, but only two hectares were used when it was established and it gradually expanded to its current six hectares. During the first years of its existence, the garden was inhabited by about 40 to 50 species of animals, including and still including the Malayan bear, rhesus macaque, baboon, Carpathian wolves and many others. Subsequently, the diversity expanded and new animals were added, such as camels, hyenas, porcupines, llamas and Kamchatka bears.

Gradually, all the terrariums were occupied and in 1958 the number of animals kept exceeded 300 and around 200 aquarium fish. More than 100 thousand people visit the zoo annually. Currently, it can boast of animal species, including severely endangered species listed in the Red Book of Endangered Animals. At first glance, you will certainly be won over by the crested macaques in the natural enclosure full of rope climbing frames, and a couple of Indian takins will certainly impress with their impressiveness. You would probably not guess from the fragile vicuna that you are looking at an animal with the softest fur in the world. And the giant capybaras? Believe it or not, they are actually relatives of your domestic guinea pigs.
