Deep rock gorges, created by the Kamenice River over several million years, are popular gorges, one of the biggest attractions for visitors to Bohemian Switzerland and the most famous destinations not only for selfie hunters.
Prince Edmund Clary-Aldringen (1813-1894) was instrumental in the creation of the Kamenice Gorge near Hřensko. This happened on 4 May 1890.
Two hundred Italian workers were the ones who did the manual labour.
Deep in the heart of the National Park Bohemian Switzerland, just a few steps from the border with Germany, lies a natural wonder that has enchanted visitors for more than a century – the gorges of the Kamenice River. You can find them near the village of Hřensko, the lowest place in the Czech Republic, and it is one of the most visited places in this picturesque area.
Two gorges, two worlds
In the area of Hřensko you can visit two gorges:
- The Wild Gorge – now open from April to October, offers sightseeing cruises on the ferries between the high sandstone walls. During the cruise, your guide will give you an engaging description of the natural attractions, rock formations and history of the place.
- Edmund’s Gorge, also known as the Silent Gorge, remains closed for the time being, but according to the municipality of Hřensko, it is planned to partially open it during the summer of 2025.

Romance and history
The caves were made accessible at the end of the 19th century by the noble Clary-Aldringen family. Originally wild and impenetrable, the valley has been transformed by human labour into a romantic landscape where nature and human skill are combined. Since then, boating on the Kamenice has become an essential part of the experience in Bohemian Switzerland.
