The deepest sandstone canyon to Saxony

Cycle from Děčín and follow the Elbe Trail, marked as cycle route no. 2. It will lead you along the Elbe River through the amazing Elbe Canyon, which is the deepest sandstone canyon in Europe. The surrounding landscape will amaze you.

Decin – Dolní Žleb – Bad Schandau – Pirna – Dresden

Through Dolní Žleb you will reach the state border, where the Czech part of the Elbe Trail is smoothly connected to its German sister called Elberadweg. The beautiful nature of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains continues beyond the border.

After a few kilometres you will see the town of Bad Schandau on the opposite bank, which is a spa town and also an ideal place to stop. The Elberadweg then leads you to the foot of the vast rock fortress of Königstein. As you wander along, you can see the popular tourist destination of Bastei on the horizon on the opposite bank.

You will be almost in Pirna, which has a very nice historical centre. From Pirna, it’s just over 20 km to the centre of Dresden. For the return journey, we recommend taking a special direct train called the Summer Comet, which runs on weekends during the tourist season and is available on the Elbe-Elbe network ticket.
