Chřibská

If you are a lover of culture, history and romantic walks through meadows and rocks, Chřibská is the right place for you. The village is located in the valley of the Chřibská Kamenice River in the westernmost part of the Lusatian Mountains Protected Landscape Area, on the border of the Bohemian Switzerland National Park, and thanks to its location it is one of the gates to the Back Bohemian Switzerland. The picturesque town consists of several local parts – Chřibská, Horní Chřibská, Dolní Chřibská and Krásné Pole.

The town is notable for its typical half-timbered houses with a base, either single-storey or with a half-timbered floor and slate roofs with dormers or decorated gables. The main landmark of the town is the church of St. George with the rectory and the Stations of the Cross.

Chřibská has become famous both at home and abroad for its glass production. The craftsmanship and talent of glassmakers, as well as the originality of production, have been tested for centuries. Horní Chřibská is home to what is probably the oldest glassworks in Europe with continuous operation, mentioned as early as 1414. However, the operation of the oldest active glassworks in Europe was terminated in 2007. The production of yarn and thread, which began in 1830 and is successfully continued by the company Amann, s.r.o., also gained great importance and fame.

Chřibská and its surroundings are home to many botanical rarities and natural wonders.

What you should see

St. George’s Church – originally wooden, rebuilt in stone in 1596 and rebuilt again in Gothic style in 1901. The church consists of a three-aisled hall with a three-sided porch. The church grounds also include a rectory, a station of the cross with four corner chapels and Renaissance tombstones along the walls of the church.

Local History Museum —dedicated to the history of Chřibská and its native son, Tadeáš Haenke. The building, No. 22, is located right on the town square.

Chřibský hrádek— on a steep cliff above the Doubický Stream valley, about 2 km from Chřibská. Archaeologists have discovered the remains of a small 13th-century rock fortress here.

Aqueduct at Chřibská Kamenice – this is the last preserved part of the waterworks supplying water to drive the waterwheel of the former Florian Hübel textile factory in Dolní Chřibská – Na Potokách.

Houses with a frame – or frame houses, typical of the region of northern Bohemia and Upper Lusatia, are characterized by a timbered ground floor and a special building element, the so-called frame, on which the roof structure or the upper, usually half-timbered floor rests. Most of these buildings can be found in Dolní Chřibská.

Muzeum československého opevnění – expozice o událostech z let 1935-1939 je k vidění v bývalé hájovně na Křížovém Buku.

Thousands of blooming orchids (orchids) are spread out on waterlogged meadows right in Chřibská. In May, you can find purple and white flowering Mayflower on the U Brodských meadow, and in August, in the Marschnerova louka nature reserve under the Spravedlován hill, you can find the marsh orchid.

Líska Nature Reserve – on the northeastern slope of Černá hora, the protected perennial marigold blooms every year in May on an area of more than one hectare.

Viewpoints around Chřibská – offer beautiful views of both the Bohemian Switzerland National Park and the Lusatian Mountains. You can get a partial view from the Spravedlování hill, Chřibský hill and Malý Stožec.

You know that…

…on the square at house no. 22 next to the former neo-Gothic town hall, there are two memorial plaques? They remind us that an exceptionally gifted Enlightenment intellectual, a prominent naturalist, traveler to South America, and botanist Tadeáš Haenke was born here in 1761. He undertook a number of research expeditions and became famous as the discoverer of the water lily plant, the Victoria regia.
