Viewpoint Bohemia

It is not a site that would fill the front pages of tourist brochures. No signposts, no information boards, no crowds of visitors. Yet it’s a place with a surprisingly powerful story.

Yes, it’s the Hangman’s Hill.

It is a surprising and somehow different view of the river and also of Děčín.

The river winds down below you, the town remains partially hidden and the surrounding hillsides create a natural backdrop. No wonder the site once earned architectural attention.

Professor František Tilšer had a viewing pavilion with an allegorical statue built here. The statue represents the personification of Bohemia – Bohemia.

Executioner’s Hill isn’t ostentatious. It’s waiting quietly for someone to notice it again.

And right next door is another remarkable building – a dilapidated Old Catholic church that seems to share the same fate: it stands on the sidelines, out of the mainstream.
