Natural swimming in Bohemian Switzerland

Although the weather outside hasn’t suggested it in recent days, summer is fast approaching, so we’d like to share a few tips for swimming in the great outdoors. Bohemian Switzerland has been linked to water since time immemorial. Indeed, it was water that was one of the main factors in creating the region’s unique landscape of sandstone towers, massifs and other bizarre formations. However, it is not just the River Elbe – the region’s main watercourse – but there are also countless natural lakes, pools and streams where you can cool off on summer days.

The village of Ostrov is best known for its towering rock formations, of which there are countless in the surrounding area. However, you’ll also find Ostrovský Pond here, which could be the destination for your first visit. The chance to swim whilst watching climbers scaling the rock formations, followed by a spot of lazing about on a sandy beach, is not something you’ll find just anywhere. There are climbing frames for children, whilst parents can enjoy refreshments at the nearby Hotel Ostrov.

For our second tip, we need to head further north to the village of Mikulášovice. Not far from there, within sight of the prominent Tanečnice observation tower, lies a beautiful natural lido with a history dating back to the period after the First World War. There is a safe paddling pool for children and, for the more daring, a five-metre diving platform. The facilities at the lido are of a high standard. There are well-maintained grassy areas for sunbathing, a children’s playground, tennis courts and refreshments. You can now travel to Mikulášovice on the newly introduced Lužickohorský Express, which will take you comfortably straight to Bohemian Switzerland.

Not far from the town of České Kamenice, in the picturesque countryside of the village of Stará Oleška, lies Olešský Pond, which offers not only excellent swimming but also fishing opportunities for keen anglers. The beaches are both grassy and sandy, and there are refreshment facilities on site. However, the main attraction of Olešský Pond is the tranquillity that awaits you here.

Deep in the woods, far from the hustle and bustle of town and mobile phone reception, lies Lesní Pond in the village of Kytlice. Believe us, despite the slightly cooler water temperature, you’ll have an unforgettable time here. And don’t worry, the temperature won’t put your children off either – they’ll be romping about on the sandy shore on hot summer’s days.

You can grab a bite to eat at the kiosk right by the pond. If you’ve had enough of swimming, you can go for a walk in the surrounding woods or play a game together at the nearby playground. Parking is available 100 metres from the pond.
