Mikulášovice – a tour or a view, and then into the water!

Mikulášovice is one of the most interesting towns in the Šluknov Hook. There are two observation towers in the vicinity offering breathtaking views. In summer, you’ll love the newly renovated outdoor swimming pool. Another point of interest is the cutlery museum.

If Mikulášovice has one truly unique attraction, it is the Cutlery Museum. It’s housed in the visitor centre building right on the square and was extended to include an additional floor during the winter of 2021/2022. This is a tip mainly for dads and older boys. Where can the whole family go, even with younger children? Definitely to Tanečnice – the northernmost viewing tower in the Czech Republic. This stone and brick tower offers panoramic views of Bohemian and Saxon Switzerland, the Lusatian Mountains, the Šluknov Hills and the Czech Central Mountains. It has stood in its current form since 1905.

For warm summer days, Mikulášovice has a slightly hidden gem. To the south of the town, you’ll find a natural lido that’s been designed in a lovely ‘old-fashioned’ style – grassy beaches, a sandy bottom and clean, if slightly chilly, water… The locals are always busy tidying up, building and sprucing up the place here, and it’s clear they love this spot.

“In the summer of 2022, the lido will be 90 years old, so we’re organising a celebration. We’re currently restoring the adjacent park. There used to be footbridges over the drainage channels here. We’d like to restore all of that over the coming years,” says Tomáš Fúsek, head of the tourist information centre.

The Mikulášovice Observatory is also undergoing a major renovation; incidentally, it is historically the oldest building of its kind in the country. However, the workers still have a lot of work ahead of them, so you can look forward to visiting it in the 2024 season at the earliest. Anyone visiting the town centre should certainly not miss St Nicholas’ Church. It is one of the largest churches in the region and its organ is one of the largest in Bohemia – it has over 2,000 pipes. History lovers will also appreciate the unique triangular Chapel of the Holy Trinity, which stands by the road towards Brtníky.

You can reach Mikulášovice (lower station) easily via the National Park Railway. Direct trains run from Šluknov, Rumburk and even from Bad Schandau in Germany.
