From Brtníky to Kyjov valley: A journey to silence, views and history in the sandstone

Looking for a route that combines deep history, breathtaking views and the raw beauty of a renewing nature? Head from Brtníky towards the Tourist Bridge. While this trail passes through a landscape scarred by bark beetle, it offers a unique insight into the immeasurable regenerative power of the national park.
🦉 Owl View: where nature takes its breath away
The first “obligatory” stop is Owl’s Lookout. There used to be a hunting lodge Šternberk, after which today only memories and foundations remain. The view into the valley shows the aftermath of the calamity, but don’t be discouraged – watching new, green life emerge from the ashes and dry logs is an extremely inspiring and calming experience.
⛺ The Great Prussian Camp: a rock fortress without walls
Few pilgrims miss the place called the Great Prussian Camp. Although it is not a camp in the modern sense, this massive sandstone overhang has served as a safe haven for centuries. Locals hid here from the weather and from foreign armies in times of war.
You know, right? Even though the place invites you to spend the night and tramps used to spend the night here, it is forbidden to spend the night here as part of the protection of the National Park. It is, however, an ideal spot for meditation, a snack or shelter from the rain. You can learn more about the history of the place from a tasteful information board from the studio of Ivo Švejnoha.
🏰 Tip for next time: Brtnický hrádek
Before you arrive at the Tourist Bridge in the heart of the Kyjov valley, there is one more challenge – Brtnický hradek. The path to it leads over dozens of steps and stairs carved into the rock. But we’ll talk about what awaits you at the top next time!
💡 Attractions and tips in the surroundings:
-
Brtnice icefalls: if you visit here in the freezing winter, turn to the icefalls (e.g. Opona or Velký kolonp). They are one of the biggest unique features of the region.
-
Wolf Mountain: Not far from Brtníky you will find the oldest lookout tower in the area with an amazing circular view.
-
The Stations of the Cross in Brtnice: a beautifully reconstructed monument right in the village, which is worth a short walk before the trip to the rocks.
