Tolštejn Castle

Rozsáhlá zřícenina hradu Tolštejn se nachází 1,5 km od vrchu Jedlová v Lužických horách. Stojí na znělcovém suku (670 m n. m.) v pískovcové oblasti. Jeho název vznikl z původního německého jména Dohlenstein (Kavčí hrad). Hrad patřil k opěrným bodům rozsáhlého panství vartenberské větve Markvaticů nad severu Čech. První zmínky o hradu pocházejí z 13. století a ví se, že prvním majitelem by Vaník z Vartenberka. Zánik hradu přinesla třicetiletá válka, kdy byl zapálen a pobořen. V 19. století přinesl romantismus oživení zájmu o hrad a roku 1866 zde byla vybudována restaurace.

The top of the rock formation is accessible via stairs and a footbridge from the restaurant, where an admission fee is charged. The view from the top, overlooking the castle, extends in all directions. You can see the peaks of the Lusatian Mountains, the Šluknov region, and Upper Lusatia, as well as the forested area toward Krásná Lípa. From Jiřetín, it’s about 500 m toward the hamlet of Rozhled, and then just about 2 km along a small road to the castle. You can also combine your trip to Tolštejn with a visit to the beautiful Stations of the Cross in Jiřetín pod Jedlovou, followed by a hike to the summit of Jedlová, where you’ll find a guesthouse with a restaurant and a stone observation tower.
