Loreto Chapel with ambits
The Rumburk Loreto is a baroque jewel of northern Bohemia. The year-round accessible sacral monument is located in the centre of the town. Until 1950 it was part of the Capuchin monastery complex. The construction of the Loreto Chapel of the Virgin Mary, the ambyte, the pilgrimage chapel of the Holy Steps and the monastery church of St. Lawrence was made possible by the Princes of Liechtenstein, who owned the Rumburk estate in the past. A replica of the Holy Hut was built in Rumburk at the beginning of the 18th century – the house where, according to tradition, Mary, Joseph and Jesus lived in Nazareth. The building plans for one of the finest Czech lorettos were supplied by the prominent Austrian architect Johann Lucas Hildebrandt. The high quality sculptural decoration comes from the Saxon sculptor Franz Biener. Other parts of the Loreto complex were built during the 18th century.
The tours of Loreto Rumburk are designed as individual, without a guide. Each visitor chooses their own pace and length of the tour. In the ambyte there are permanent exhibitions about the history of the Loreto chapel, the Capuchin monastery and an exhibition of photographs and plans of the Loreto underground. The Czech-German exhibition of religious art of the Šluknov region is accessible in the entrance building. The gradually restored grounds of the Loreto Rumburk come alive during the year with concerts, exhibitions and accompanying cultural events. Regular masses are held in the Marian pilgrimage site. In the winter season, tours of the monastery crib from 1922 are held in the Church of St. Lawrence.
