Chmelník Hill in Děčín

On the southwestern edge of Děčín, the forested basalt cone of Chmelník Hill (508 m above sea level) rises majestically. . Locals refer to it simply as Chmelák (known in German as Hopfenberg). This striking volcanic hill takes its name from the Děčín neighborhood of Chmelnice and is now slowly regaining its status as a very popular destination for day trips.

A Volcanic Landmark Above the Elbe River

Chmelník is considered the most prominent of the hills in the Ústí Central Mountains. This striking effect is enhanced primarily by its eastern section, which slopes steeply down to the very bank of the Elbe. In the immediate vicinity, it forms a group of four peaks together with Popovický vrch, Klobouk, and Lotarův vrch, ranking as the second-highest hill in this group.

Chmelník’s steep slopes are covered by a valuable scree forest, managed by the Děčín Forestry Office.

The slope also features an educational trail with a QR code detailing the history of the local landscape, including a lookout tower from the late 19th century.
