The Phoenix That Rose from the Ashes
The picturesque dominant of the northernmost town of Šluknov is the castle, a valuable Renaissance building from the second half of the 16th century, which was built by the Šlejnic family on the site of a late Gothic fortress. The building served as the economic center of the entire outcrop until 1945, when the town became its owners. The castle was filled with a museum, library and offices. However, a major fire in 1986 turned the building into a ruin and its fate seemed sealed. The town managed to do what no one had ever hoped for – not to sell the dilapidated castle to any of the many interested parties and gradually repaired it step by step, obtained financial subsidies and finally ceremonially opened the entire castle. This happened on the last Saturday in June 2007 at the great period Castle Festival. The castle festivities in the castle and castle park in the period style are already becoming a tradition on the last Saturday in June and one of the largest cultural events in the city.
