Regional Museum in Děčín
The Regional Museum in Děčín, a public institution of the Ústí nad Labem Region, has been housed since 1953 in the 18th-century building that formerly served as the administrative headquarters of the Thun-Hohenstein family. It also includes two large regional branches in Rumburk and Varnsdorf. In total, it manages more than 220,000 collection items, mostly of a regional nature. The majority of the items date from the 19th century, a period of rapid development in our region. The museum also contributes to exhibitions at the castle in Děčín.
Since ancient times, Děčín has been a hub of navigation on the Elbe; its inhabitants have always built and owned ships and made their living from trade. The museum has specialized in this field since 1969, when it opened the permanent exhibition “The Development of Water Transport on the Elbe.” Its collections of photographs, specialized publications, navigation charts, and ship drawings are among the largest in the Czech Republic.
The most historically significant exhibit is the permanent exhibition “Gothic Art in the Děčín Region,” featuring a representative collection of 14th-century Gothic sculpture. – 16. from the region. The oldest form of the town of Děčín is showcased in the permanent exhibition “A Town in a Meadow,” which features artifacts from the original, now-vanished royal town that was relocated in the 14th century to its current location north of the chateau, formerly a castle. The town’s more recent history is explored in the smaller exhibition “A Walk Through Old Děčín,” which presents the appearance of Děčín and the neighboring Podmokly area, primarily in the 18th and 19th centuries. The museum also features a smaller permanent natural history exhibition titled “Birds of the Děčín Region.” Part of the space is dedicated to thematic exhibitions, which change regularly. The museum in Děčín also serves in part as an art gallery. Both well-known and regional artists, as well as local art groups, are regularly given the opportunity to exhibit their work here. The museum’s regular program also includes creative workshops, educational programs, and cultural events.
The museum courtyard, featuring a large collection of sculptures and a landscaped garden, is used for social events as well as for relaxing on a summer day. Popular events include Children’s Day celebrations and the well-attended Museum Christmas Market.
