Notice: The main viewpoint on Bastei in Saxon Switzerland is permanently closed due to possible instability in the rock massif. It will not be open until further notice and all security precautions will be made. It is only one of many viewpoints around the Bastei. All the other viewpoints and the tourist bridge remain open to the public.
Bastei (305 m a.s.l.) is a rock formation with several viewpoints over the Elbe canyon in Saxon Switzerland on the right bank of the river Elbe, located between spa town Rathen and town Wehlen. The greatest attraction is of course the famous stone bridge Basteibrücke, the oldest tourist bridge in Europe, measuring 76 meters and spanning the deep abyss Mardertelle. It connects Bastein and old rock castle Neurathen. The creation of the bridge dates back to 1851 and makes Bastebrücke the very first european tourist structure and even today counts as the most renowned tourist attraction and dominant of Saxon Switzerland, offering exceptionaly wide views of the Elbe canyon and table mountains that surround it. Located on the plateau is also a hotel with restaurant so there is no need to worry for all those that arrive at Bastei hungry or thirsty.
