During the Middle Ages, they developed into decorative covers on which biblical scenes were depicted in various techniques, especially those related to the Passion of Christ. Their use began to decline with the advent of the Reformation in the 16th century. Zittau represents a European significant site with its two preserved cloths.

The large Lenten cloth measuring 8.2 x 6.8 m is the largest preserved textile of its kind in Germany and the third in Europe (or in the world). It was commissioned in 1472 by Jacob Gürtler, a spice and grain merchant from Zittau. On an area of 56 square meters, 90 scenes in 10 rows with scenes from the Old and New Testaments are depicted in tempera paints on linen cloth. The cloth was used in the John’s Church for more than 200 years (see entry), even though it had been used by Lutherans since the mid-16th century. Its further fate is unknown. In 1840, the local town hall librarian discovered it rolled up in a bookshelf. Two years later, it was transported to Dresden, returning in 1876. It was exhibited only seven times until 1933. At the end of the war, it was transported to Ojvín due to fears of military operations. There it was found by Soviet soldiers, who used it, cut into four pieces, as a bathroom curtain. Later it was thrown into the forest, where a local citizen found it while collecting wood. Until 1994 it was kept in a museum depot, during the GDR period, so that it would not remind of the “merits” of Soviet soldiers for cultural heritage.

The small Lenten cloth measures 4.3 x 3.5 m. It was made in the same technique in 1573 for the side altar of St. John’s Church. Its main panel depicts the Crucifixion, accompanied by other scenes from the New Testament. It was used together with the large cloth until 1672, but its subsequent fate was apparently more peaceful: from the 19th century it was a museum exhibit.

Both canvases were restored in 1994–95 by the Swiss Abegg Foundation, which is dedicated to restoring textile artifacts from around the world.
