It belongs to the most valuable parts of the Elbe Sandstone Protected Landscape Area (PLKO) – it is a National Nature Reserve.<\/p>\n
The Elbe River has created a canyon up to 300 m deep in Cretaceous sediments through its erosional activity – the most massive sandstone canyon in Europe – and in its lower part has exposed old crystalline bedrock. The Elbe Canyon is a habitat for a number of endangered, protected and rare species. The coastal small flower (the last site in the Czech Republic, a critically endangered species) can still be found on the gravel and sand alluvium of the river, and the European beaver (a critically endangered species) has returned to the banks of the Elbe after many decades. Peregrine falcon, eagle owl, common wagtail and common sandpiper nest in the canyon, among others. <\/p>\n
Especially on the right bank of the Elbe, extensive natural forest stands have been preserved, from the floodplain forest on the banks to the beech forests on the canyon slopes to the relict pines on the edges of the sandstone walls. The unique landscape value of the area is evident especially from the viewpoints above the canyon (Belved\u00e9r u Labsk\u00e1 Str\u00e1n\u011b, R\u016f\u017eov\u00fd h\u0159eben). <\/p>\n
International railways and roads pass through the canyon. The Elbe Valley is also an important migration route in these places – many species of animals and plants enter our country through it, and conversely, organisms from the Czech Basin spread northwards in the opposite direction. The only direct connection between the North German Lowland and the Czech Basin is a first-order biocorridor, comparable, for example, to the Iron Gates on the Danube. <\/p>\n
Archaeological findings show that the area was not just an impenetrable forest, but also a “highway of prehistoric and historical cultures.”<\/p>\n
Cruise ships from D\u011b\u010d\u00edn to H\u0159ensko pass through this interesting area, and a road leads along the right bank to the border crossing through H\u0159ensko to Germany. The area is crossed by a network of marked tourist routes.
