Please note: The main viewpoint at the Bastei in Saxon Switzerland is closed for a long time, possibly permanently, due to a possible rock massif loosening. This is just one of the viewpoints at the Bastei, the other viewpoints and the rock bridge are of course still accessible. <\/p>\n
Bastei (305 m above sea level) is a rock formation with viewing platforms in Saxon Switzerland on the right bank of the Elbe between the spa town of Rathen and the town of Wehlen. Its main attraction is the stone bridge Basteibr\u00fccke, the first tourist bridge in Europe, it is 76 meters long and spans the deep abyss of Mardertelle (Kun\u00ed jama). It connects Bastei and the rock castle of Neurathen. The bridge dates back to 1851 and was the first European structure for tourists. Even today it is one of the most famous tourist attractions and landmarks of Saxon Switzerland and offers wide views of the Elbe river valley and the Elbe Sandstone.
