The monastery was founded in 1248 by the lords of Kamenc. In a charter dated 13 October 1248, the monastery was given the income from the rectory and hospital in Kamenc, and two years later the convent adopted the Cistercian order and the Altzella monastery became a visitation monastery. In 1264, the monastery came under the protection of the Dukes of Brandenburg, John II. and Otto III., who freed the monastery from all taxes and services and endowed it with its own judicial powers. The convent was supported from its foundation until his death by Bernard of Kamenc, one of the founders, a prominent clergyman at the royal court of the Duke of Wroc\u0142aw and then the King of Bohemia.
