Mikulášovice, horní BUS, TRAIN STOPS – Bílý Potok (White Brook) Valley – Zadní Doubice 7 – Niedermühle - Horní Splav/Obere Schleuse/Upper Weir, boats 10 – Hermannseck - Rabensteine 13 – Zadní Jetřichovice 13.5 – Šaunštejn 19 – Vysoká Lípa BUS STOP 20 km
The new green route leads us from upper Mikulášovice past the train stop and via a meadow trail south to an open landscape with frequent views into the forests. We head downward through the forest to the crossroads with the blue route (Route No. 1). The green route leads more steeply downward through the forest along an old trail to the valley of Bílý Potok/Weissbachtal/White Brook, where there is a crossroads with the German yellow route.
This takes us further south, along the German side of the river (the left bank is Czech), through a beautiful valley, between rock formations in places, to the mouth of Vlčí (Wolf's) Creek at the Křinice. Following the markers, we cross the creek here once again to the Czech side, to the Brtnický Bridge. We walk along Křinice Valley for 1 km to Zadní Doubice. Head across the border again to the German side, and follow along the right bank of Křinice to the nearest crossroads.
We continue further to Obere Schleuse along the red route. Set off through Křinice Valley to the buildings of the former Niedermühle mill, a beautifully preserved structure, one of the oldest in Bohemian-Saxon Switzerland.
The red markers lead us further along a forest trail high above the Křinice to Horní Splav (Upper Weir) Gorge (Obere Schleuse). This is one of the most beautiful places in the area and the entire Czech/German border. Regular boat rides with a German ferryman – from Easter through the end of October.
The boat ride is worth your time. Tickets (German services, pay in EUR) are sold at the kiosk in the gorge in front of the dock. You can also choose to take the marked path parallel to the reservoir.
At the end of the boat ride, there is a climb to the upper sections of the gorge. Here we will find a crossroads. We climb up the steps along the red markers to Hermannseck, a rocky promontory with a viewpoint hut (view across the deep forests into Křinice Valley). Continue through forests west to the crossroads with the green route, turn left onto the Rabensteinweg route. After just under 2 km, we come to the edge of the Rabensteine cliffs (on the left), from which there is an excellent view of the Křinice Valley, which meanders through meadows surrounded by rock formations. The green route descends steeply back to the Křinice. Follow the path back upstream a few hundred yards, and cross a wooden bridge to the Czech side to the former village of Zadní Jetřichovice.
We continue further into the interior of Bohemia along the Česká Silnice (Czech Road), and at its crossroads, we head right along bicycle route 3030 (initially along the green route). The markers lead through the beautiful Hluboký Důl (Deep Basin) along an asphalt path that later climbs steeply to the red route. Once there, turn right to the Malá Pravčická Brána (Little Pravčická Gate), then descend via a footpath along the cliffs, to the Šaunštejn cliff side castle. Take the steps to the platform with views of Vysoká Lípa and Růžák Hill.
Upon returning to the path, we descend through the forest on the red route to Česká Silnice. Afterwards, we follow the yellow route, and in 10 minutes, we find ourselves in Vysoká Lípa at the Vysoká Lípa, restaurace bus stop and two lodging houses with restaurants.
